We just got our Fila two days ago. He was living with a family that had a few huskies, and Mr. Man (not his name)...er...got friendly with one of the females. Shortly after the puppies were born, he became very aggressive towards un-neutered males. I found him on craigslist, of all places, and the "adoption fee" was a hundred bucks. When she told me he was a "Brazilian Mastiff", I thought she was putting on airs, or that the person that sold him to her was yanking her chain. I'd NEVER heard of one, much less a Fila Brasileiro. Boy, was I shocked when I went home with him and did research. I had no idea what a rare breed he is! He's by no means show quality (he has some dapples on his tummy, and a few other disqualifications that are fairly minor) so he will be neutered soon. But so far, he is incredibly protective, though he doesn't seem to bite. But when I change clothes where he can't see me, or when my boyfriend does, he growls. It's a pretty scary growl. But he recognizes the scent when we get close enough, or I'll hug and kiss my boyfriend to show our dog that yes, everything is alright and everyone is okay. It's amazing. He's a parvo survivor, and he's a year old. They MUST be trained early. But yes, he seems to walk just fine in the neighborhood, even passing a yard with a very aggressive pit and only looking sideways. I took him with me in the car and sat in front of a busy supermarket while my roommate did some shopping, and all he did was drool. Sat by my side and barely noticed anyone. He may not be show-quality, but after only two days, I'm in total love. I feel very, very lucky. He's everything I could possibly want in a dog.
