BARF and the Fila Brasileiro
What is BARF?
BARF
originally stood for Bones And Raw Foods, but it is also now known
as Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods. Quite simply, BARF is based
on feeding raw meaty bones, animal offal, raw vegetables, fruit and
supplements. The operative word here is RAW. All of this is quite
appropriate for your Fila.
Should I feed my Fila the BARF diet?
Absolutely. The Fila is a slow to mature giant breed and needs a
carefull feeding regimen, especially through the puppy years, to
avoid joint and other health problems. A puppy should never be fed
for rapid growth, so a high fat, high calorie diet is not
adviseable. Fortunately, the BARF diet can provide a slow steady
growth for Fila pups.
Is
all kibble unhealthy for dogs?
Not
at all. More and more holistic, organic and natural pet food
suppliers are popping up as the demand for a healthier way to feed
increases. Be sure to research ingredients and origins of the kibble
very well if this is the route you choose. These prepared foods are
not the cheapest way to feed, we have found that buying all the raw
ingredients is a much more cost effective, but certainly more time
consuming, way of feeding.
What
about Fila pups?
Fila
pups do great on BARF, and you can introduce them to it as soon as
their eyes open. Note I didn't say wean them at this age...but they
will certainly appreciate a few raw meaty bones to cut their teeth
on!
